Nelson is home to 25 boutique wineries nestled amongst the Moutere Hills or the ‘river garden’ of the Waimea Plains. Nelson is the country's eighth largest wine region. The vineyards occupy scattered pockets with orchards, market gardens and farms. Soil structure tends to be clay loams over hard clay subsoil. The region is sheltered from rain by mountains to the west while proximity to the sea has the effect of moderating temperature extremes. Nelson vineyards concentrate on grape varieties suited to cooler conditions, with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir accounting for over 80% of the grapes grown. The Moutere Selection

Neudorf Vineyard, credited with producing one of New Zealand's best Chardonnays - powerful and made from ripe fruit. They aim to produce elegant wines with texture and balance.

Glovers, producers of long lived, well structured, traditional style red and white wines for the cellar and table. Rimu Grove, handcrafted Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris wines using traditional techniques.

Kahurangi, producers of premium wines for some of Nelson’s oldest wines.

Woollaston Estates, produces high quality, distinctive wines produced in a gravity fed winery built into the hillside. Glorious open views, lawns and a gallery.

The Waimea Plains Selection

Fossil Ridge, a small family owned boutique vineyard producing award winning wines from single vineyard grapes.

Waimea Estates, produce good Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, plus smaller volumes of Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, Rieslings and a Rosé. When vintage conditions allow, ‘Bolitho Reserve’ wines are also created.

Brightwater, dedicated to producing individual, well crafted wines that display true fruit character, elegance & fine balance.

Seifried, the biggest and one of the oldest established wine producers in Nelson. Main varieties grown include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.

Stafford Lane, a boutique winery producing Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc & Chardonnay as well as extra virgin olive oils.
