1925 Morris Commercial Charabanc |
| Our 1925 Morris Commercial Charabanc is a unique vehicle and
one of the earliest that Morris produced. She arrived in New
Zealand in October 2005 on the Nicolai Maersk.
The first recorded charabanc journey was from London
to Clacton in 1896 running on solid tyres at around 8km an hour.
The word 'charabanc' is derived from the French meaning "seats
in rows". The coach built body, purposefully designed for
seaside work, carried holiday-makers along the sea front in Sidmouth,
England until the 1950's. A tradition that will now carry on in
Nelson!!! This particular open sided design was given the nick-name
of "Toast Rack", for obvious reasons!! The charabanc has an 1800cc engine (13.9hp) and
a three speed "crash" gearbox. It has a top speed of
about 55km per hour and is fully air conditioned!!

1952 Bedford KZ (known affectionately as Little B ) |
| K denotes the axle rating and hence carrying capacity of the
vehicle. The Z shows that it was imported to New Zealand as
a "knock down" i.e chassis and engine cowling. The body was
built in Christchurch by New Zealand bodies Ltd.
Originally used in the RNZAF as a bomber crew transporter.
The special feature of this vehicle is the twin tyres on
the rear axle which we usually reserved for heavier vehicles
of the M and O type. They were intended for increased stability
on the high speed dash across the runway!!
"Little B" retired from the forces and was used as school
bus somewhere in New Zealand. Any information or photos
of this vehicle or others of its type in service would be
gratefully appreciated.
Eventually she was converted
to a house bus in the 1990's and then back again , as you see,
in 2006. LITTLE B has the original 3L 6 cylinder engine and was one of the first Bedfords to have an all synchromesh gearbox
